SAMRAT ASHOKA EARLY LIFE • Ashoka was born as Devanampriya Priyadarshi Samrat Ashoka, in 304 BC, in Pataliputra (close to contemporary Patna), to the second emperor of the Mauryan Dynasty Bindusara and SubhadrangÄ« .He was the grandchild of Chandragupta Maurya, founding father of the Maurya dynasty and therefore the builder of 1 of the most important empires in ancient Bharat. • His mother was queen SubhadrangÄ«. She gave him the name Ashoka, meaning "one without sorrow". Ashoka had several elder siblings, all of whom were his half-brothers from the opposite wives of his father Bindusara.
